About STOP-Bang

STOP-Bang was developed by anesthesiologists to screen surgical patients for obstructive sleep apnea, and it’s now used widely by hospitals and sleep physicians. The name spells out what it asks about: Snoring, Tiredness, Observed pauses in breathing, high blood Pressure, BMI over 35, Age over 50, Neck size over 16 inches and male Gender.

What your score means

  • 0 to 2: low risk of moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea
  • 3 to 4: intermediate risk
  • 5 to 8: high risk. A score of 2 or more on the first four questions plus a high BMI, a large neck or male sex also counts as high risk.

What to do next

A screener isn’t a diagnosis. Only a sleep study can diagnose sleep apnea. If your score is intermediate or high, a home sleep test is the next step, and we can order it. If your score is low but snoring, jaw pain or poor sleep still bother you, Dr. Love can help with those too.
