When the CPAP ends up in the closet
CPAP works when it’s worn. The trouble is that a lot of people who are prescribed CPAP stop using it, or pull the mask off halfway through the night. The mask leaks, the hose tangles, the air dries out your mouth, or you simply can’t sleep with it.
For mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, and for people who can’t tolerate CPAP, sleep medicine guidelines recommend a custom oral appliance. It’s a slim mouthpiece that holds your lower jaw slightly forward to keep your airway open. No mask, no hose, no noise. Compare CPAP and an oral appliance.
Switching from CPAP
You won’t be starting over. Bring your sleep study and your prescription to your consultation, and Dr. Love will go over your results with you. She works alongside your sleep physician, and a follow-up sleep test checks that the appliance is controlling your apnea.
Some people with severe sleep apnea end up using both: CPAP at home and the appliance for travel. Your sleep physician and Dr. Love will recommend what fits your diagnosis.

I already have a CPAP. Can I switch to an appliance?
Often, yes. If you have mild to moderate sleep apnea, or you can’t tolerate CPAP, an oral appliance is a recommended option. Bring your sleep study and prescription, and Dr. Love will go over whether it fits your diagnosis.
Will I need a new sleep study?
Not necessarily before treatment. If you have a recent study, bring it. After your appliance is adjusted, a follow-up sleep test confirms it is working.
